Autumn in the UK is truly magical. As the leaves turn to fiery shades of red, orange, and gold, the crisp air sets the perfect backdrop for a peaceful walk in the countryside. Whether you're a seasoned rambler or just looking for a weekend escape, autumn walks in the UK offer a chance to immerse yourself in nature at its most spectacular. From the medievil deer parks i Leicestershire to the rolling hills of the Lake District, there’s no shortage of breathtaking landscapes to explore.
In this post, we’ll take you through a few of our favorite places to enjoy an autumnal walk in the UK.
First up is Bradgate Park which is right on our doorstep. It really is a gem of history and natural beauty, perfect for a day of exploration. If you haven't visited we highly recommend doing so, whether you want to hike or just potter with the kids. Originally enclosed as a deer park about 800 years ago, it now stretches across 830 acres of wild, accessible countryside. The park’s landscape is filled with dramatic rocky outcrops and ancient oak trees, many over 500 years old, creating a rugged beauty that feels timeless.
As you wander through Bradgate, you’ll be treated to stunning, panoramic views that change with the seasons, offering something new and beautiful year-round. At the highest point stands the iconic Old John Tower, built in 1784 to replace an old windmill. Originally, it was a gathering spot for the Earl and his guests, who enjoyed lunches while overlooking his racehorses and the hunts below. Today, it’s a beloved landmark offering breathtaking views across the valley and, on a clear day, all the way to the city of Leicester. The sense of history combined with the natural beauty makes every step through Bradgate Park an experience to remember.
The Lake District is a walker’s paradise, particularly in autumn when the fells and woodlands are ablaze with autumn colours. Wainwright's fabled peaks, like Scafell Pike and Helvellyn, offer stunning views of golden forests and reflective lakes. For an easier option, try Grasmere’s circular route around Rydal Water – a peaceful walk richw ith literary history, as it was home to the famous poet William Wordsworth.
For a more challenging hike, head to Snowdonia National Park. Snowdon itself may be a daunting climb, but with well-marked paths and incredible views, it's a rewarding experience. If you're after something a bit gentler, try the Aber Falls walk, where waterfalls cascade down mossy rocks, creating a postcard-worthy scene.
Now that you've got a few ideas for beautiful autumn walks, it’s time to make sure you're kitted out with the right gear. The UK’s autumn weather can be unpredictable, so it's essential to be prepared for everything from crisp sunny mornings to sudden showers and chilly winds.
The Perfect Walking Bag
A good walking bag is a must for any day out. Look for a sturdy, lightweight backpack with padded shoulder straps and waterproofing. Our Rambler Rucksack is a popular choice for autumn walks, with plenty of space for extra layers, a packed lunch, all kept safe dry by the coated ripstop fabric and waterproof lining.
Cosy, Warm Socks
Cold, damp feet are the quickest way to ruin a walk, so invest in high-quality walking socks. Cotton socks are a favourite for autumn walking because they offer comfort while keeping your feet warm and dry. Our hiking socks and trail socks are both designed for comfort and practicality, no matter the trail you end up on.
Hats to Keep You Toasty
As the temperature drops, you'll need a warm hat to protect against the chilly winds. Our 100% wool beanies will keep you cosy, while still allowing your head to breathe during more strenuous parts of the walk. Our Moorland Beane is a great choice, with its snug fit and classic style that’ll keep you comfortable without feeling too bulky.
Scarves for Layering Up
A scarf is an essential for autumn walking, especially in exposed areas. Our Fell Check scarf will keep you warm without being too heavy. Woven from 100% wool it is naturally breathable ensuring you won’t overheat when you start climbing.
Final Tips for a Memorable Autumn Walk
Check the Weather: The weather can change rapidly in the UK, especially in autumn. Always check the forecast before heading out and bring layers you can easily add or remove.
Stay Hydrated: It may be cooler, but don’t forget to bring plenty of water. Our reusable water bottles will keep your drink cold (or hot) for hours.
Bring Snacks: Autumn walks can be long, and you’ll burn more energy in cooler weather, so pack snacks like fruit, nuts, or energy bars to keep you going. We have 2 sizes of Bento boxes that will ensure your snacks stay fresh until lunch time.
Protect Your Feet: In addition to good socks, make sure your walking boots are sturdy and waterproof. Our hiking socks will keep your feet warm and comfortable.
Autumn in the UK is the perfect time to explore the country’s natural beauty. From the tranquil woodlands of the New Forest to the awe-inspiring peaks of the Scottish Highlands, there’s an autumn walk for every type of explorer. With the right gear – from your walking bag to your cosy socks – you'll be ready to tackle the elements and make the most of the season’s stunning scenery.
So, pull on your boots, grab your scarf, and head out into the wild – adventure awaits!
